Imran Kotwal's visit
As part of the RE curriculum, all children spend time learning about other religions to support their knowledge and understanding as well as their growth in tolerance and respect for the religious beliefs of others. During our whole school learning about Islam, we invited Imran Kotwal, from Muslim Learner Services based in Bolton, to visit us.
As well as being a qualified teacher, Imran Kotwal is a Hafidh al Qur’an and can lead Muslims in prayer. He has supported a number of SACREs (Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education), Diocesan Bodies and MATs in leading CPD on Islam to support teaching and learning, and he is the Muslim representative for SACRE in Salford.
Through interactive assemblies, the children learnt about the 5 Pillars of Islam in bespoke age-appropriate ways. Imran showed artefacts linked to the 5 Pillars and the children had the opportunity to try on a hijab, kneel on a prayer mat, taste dates, attempt to read from the Qur’an and to learn about charity and fasting. Imran also sang the Al-Fatiha, which is the opening of the Qur’an, to the children, which further heightened their awareness and appreciation of his faith.
After the assemblies, Imran then spent time with learners in the classroom with a range of interactive workshops about Zakat, Ramadan, pilgrimage and the Qur’an.
The children said:
“I learnt so much about how the Muslim religion is different and similar to my own. It made me think more about the importance of prayer.”
“This day really inspired me. I am so grateful for this experience and to think about different religions. I think I will always remember the Five Pillars.”
“I really enjoyed learning about giving 2.5% of your money to charity as so many people live in poverty.”
“Thank you so much Imran, I had an amazing day and I really enjoyed the dates!”
"I think it was beneficial that the Islamic man came in because it can help people be open-minded about other people's religions and cultures, and it was very interesting to learn about .
